Quick answer
Where did FMCSA L&I go?
FMCSA's Licensing & Insurance (L&I) Public stopped accepting filings at 8:00 PM ET on May 14, 2026 and moved to a new system called MOTUS. L&I Public is still online but only for historical records — current insurance and cancellation filings now live in the MOTUS datasets.
The short answer
- L&I Public still loads, but only shows records up to the May 14, 2026 cutover.
- New registration and insurance filings moved to MOTUS.
- MOTUS filings are not reflected in L&I — don’t rely on L&I for current status.
- The 30-day cancellation-notice rule (49 CFR 387.313) is unchanged; the notices are just in a new dataset.
What to use instead
For one carrier, use our free DOT / MC lookup — it reads current data and tells you the insurance on file and whether a cancellation is pending. For tracking every pending cancellation across a state, XDate Alert delivers them daily. For the full background on the shutdown, see FMCSA L&I Public shutdown explained.
Frequently asked questions
Where did FMCSA L&I go?
L&I Public is still online for historical records, but as of 8:00 PM ET on May 14, 2026 it no longer accepts registration or insurance filings — those moved to FMCSA's new MOTUS system. New insurance and cancellation data is in the MOTUS datasets, not L&I.
Why does L&I show old data?
Because new filings now go to MOTUS, L&I reflects records up to the May 14, 2026 cutover. It's a historical archive now, not a live feed.
How do I look up a carrier's insurance today?
Use a USDOT or MC lookup against current MOTUS-era data. XDate Alert's free lookup does this, and our daily alerts cover every pending cancellation in your state.
